ITC Colloquies presented ‘Unveiling the Blatant Act of Cultural Appropriation and Plagiarism’- a talk by Syed Aamir Ali Shah of Aamiriat.
In recent times, the pervasive issue of cultural appropriation and plagiarism has gained heightened attention. This phenomenon involves the adoption of elements from a marginalized culture without proper understanding or respect. It not only erodes the cultural significance of practices and symbols but also perpetuates power imbalances. The act of plagiarism compounds the offense, as individuals and entities exploit and profit from the creative expressions of others without due credit or acknowledgment. This reprehensible behavior not only undermines the authenticity of diverse cultures but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes. It is imperative for society to foster awareness and educate against such practices, promoting cultural appreciation and ethical creativity. By unveiling and condemning these blatant acts, we can work towards fostering a more inclusive and respectful global community that celebrates diversity rather than appropriating it.
Syed Aamir Ali Shah, the blogger behind Instagram account Aamiriat, started his blog in 2012. A business graduate with a background in advertising and a career in fintech, Aamir pursued fashion as a passionate side project from magazines, newspapers and online platforms over the years. On Instagram, Aamiriat has garnered attention with a discerning eye for detail, known for bold critiques that expose copycats. Beyond scathing fashion reviews, Aamiriat has expanded into the realm of textiles and fashion history, offering an engaging and educational perspective.
The talk took place on October 12, 2023 at the ITC Auditorium at 2pm and it was open to ITC students and faculty.
The talk is uploaded on our YouTube channel ‘ITC Online’.
